Fire Risk Assessment - The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
The Fire Safety Order which came into Force in October 2006 requires all businesses to carry out a Fire Risk Assessment and to take a proactive approach to minimise the risk of fire and the spread of fire. If five or more people are employed then it must be a written Fire Risk Assesment.
So who is responsible?
- Employer with control of a workplace, failing that...
- Person with overall management of a building
- Occupier of premises
- If a building is empty the owner of the premises
Whilst other people like landlords have some control, the primary responsibility rests with the employer.
The "responsible person" will be held accountable. The Order advises the "responsible person" to nominate competent suppliers - that can demonstrate they have the "appropriate skills and experience".

Part 2 - Fire Safety Duties
Risk Assessment - The responsible person must make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to which relevant persons are exposed for the purpose of identifying the general fire precautions he needs to take to comply with the requirements and prohibitions imposed on him by or under this order. Any such assessment must be reviewed by the responsible person regularly so as to keep it up to date.
Other areas include:
- Fire Fighting and Fire Detection
- Emergency Routes and Exits
- Maintenance of Equipment
- Training
- Protection of Fire Fighters
Prevent Fire Limited can help your business comply with this Order.
